The problem

A warranty claim rests on an assumption that is almost never tested: that the part in the box is the part that was sold under warranty. In practice it may be a counterfeit, a cheaper substitute, a worn part pulled from a different unit, or the same part claimed twice.

The usual defenses do not settle the question. A serial number proves only that a number exists — it can be removed, re-applied, or copied onto something else. A barcode or label identifies whatever it happens to be stuck to. Visual inspection tells you the part looks right, which is exactly what a good counterfeit is designed to do. None of these identify the individual unit.

Why serial numbers and labels fall short

Every conventional method shares the same weakness: the identifier is added to the part rather than taken from it. Anything added can be removed, damaged, transferred or reproduced. The identity and the object are two separate things, and fraud lives in the gap between them.
