The problem
Accounting for high-consequence and sensitive items is a recurring, manual, high-stakes process. Why marked serialization does not fully solve it
IUID under MIL-STD-130 requires permanent unique identification of Department of Defense property, conventionally through physical marking, and the same pattern repeats anywhere a sticker, barcode, tag or label stands in for an item's identity instead of the item itself. Marking works until the mark does not.
- Stickers and barcodes peel, fade, smear or are swapped between items.
- Etchings and labels wear, corrode or are damaged in field conditions.
- A tag or marking applied to an item can be removed from it and applied to another.
- Some items cannot be marked without compromising them.
- A re-marked item carries an identifier that looks entirely legitimate.
A better approach: no-touch serialization

Where high-consequence accountability matters beyond defense

The same enrolled identity produces a complete item-level audit history: manufacture, procurement, depot storage, installation, field use, maintenance and disposition. Every authentication event is timestamped and logged against the item's signature, so provenance is established by the checking process rather than reconstructed from records.
